A new research project to investigate the top-up curriculum required for animal management learners progressing to Veterinary Science Higher Education

The consortium has secured funds from the Royal Veterinary College funded VETNET Lifelong Learning Network (LLN) to investigate the top-up curriculum required for animal management learners progressing to Veterinary Science Higher Education. This will involve research into learners perceptions together with close examination of the National Diploma in Animal Management in relation to A Levels in Biology and Chemistry with a view to identifying gaps
Executive Director Alastair Taylor commented “This project seeks to meet the VETNET LLN key objective of increasing opportunities for vocational learners to progress into veterinary and animal related higher education and specifically the VETNET LLN aim to “develop, through work with institutions, curriculum that will allow vocational learners to progress smoothly into veterinary and animal science related degree courses”
He added “This project is around stretching the more able students, particularly through collaboration with Vet Schools whereby “higher flying” students following vocational programmes , such as the BTEC Diploma in Animal Management, can be identified early enough for additional learning and development to be established as a means of facilitating their progress to veterinary and animal related higher education”
The project is due for completion in the summer of 2008
